Cables Keep the Bottom Edge Level
A lift cable connects a fitting at each lower corner to a drum on the spring system. Working as a pair, the two cables raise the door, which is why one weak cable lets its corner sag, twists the panels and makes the entire door look crooked.
Cables rarely give up on their own, so look nearby for the cause: scored drum grooves, a bracket that has worked loose or a roller stem that bent. We renew the cable and correct that cause, so the repair holds and the door keeps its straight, even look.
Clues a Cable Needs Replacing
One corner hangs low
A raised door that tilts, with one bottom corner hanging lower than the other, points to a cable that jumped or broke on that side.
Frayed or kinked strands
Tiny broken wires sticking out, a curl in the cable or a rusty sheen mean the cable has weakened and should be replaced.
Slack in a closed door
A cable drooping instead of staying taut may have hopped off its drum, which can tangle it and bend nearby panels.
What the Repair Involves
- I
Hold the door steady
Clamps keep the door from moving and spring tension is released with proper tools, so the loose cable can be handled without surprises.
- II
Trace the root cause
We examine drums, brackets, bottom fittings and neighboring rollers for the burr, bend or loose part that chewed up the cable.
- III
Renew and rebalance
Fresh cables go on both sides, tension is reset and the door is balanced by hand, then cycled to confirm it rises and lowers level.
Cable Questions
- Should both cables be changed together?
- Normally yes. They have shared the load since installation, and a single new cable beside an old one can leave the door tugging to one side. Renewing the pair is neater, lasts longer and adds little work once the door is supported.
- Is it okay to hook a slipped cable back on?
- We advise against it, because the cable is carrying spring tension and a frayed strand or scored drum will let it escape again. Replacing it and checking the drum ends the cycle, instead of repeating it a few weeks later.
- Can a cable failure harm the panels?
- It can. When a cable lets go, one corner drops, and the twisting may crease the bottom section or pull hinges loose. We look over the panels while we work and tell you what we see.
